In the Vedic understanding, karma is not punishment, reward or fate imposed from outside. It is the sacred law of cause and consequence through which the soul learns, matures and gradually returns to greater awareness.
Every life carries three movements of karma.
Sanchita Karma is the vast reservoir of actions, impressions, tendencies and unfinished lessons accumulated across many lifetimes.
Prarabdha Karma is the portion of that accumulated karma which has already ripened and must be experienced in this birth through particular circumstances, relationships, responsibilities and turning points.
Kriyamana Karma is the karma being created now through every thought, intention, word, action and response.
This is where the Vedic teaching becomes deeply empowering.
We may not be able to avoid all that has already begun to ripen, but we are never without consciousness, discernment or choice. The way we meet Prarabdha becomes part of the Kriyamana we create, and that Kriyamana contributes to what is carried forward.
